‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Breaking Records! – Hope For Video Game Films?

‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ has come a long way since the horrifying first trailer was released. A CGI monster that barely resembled Sonic was attempted to be passed off as the Sega all-star. Luckily for us, the studio heard the outcries and over the next few months and spendings tons of cash later, we got the redesign that does justice to the character. What happened was, ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ may have given new hope for video game adaptation.

Many viewers went in support of the film simply for that reason. However, it seems Sonic had more punch behind him. Paramount’s Sega adaptation just broke the record for a video game movie’s three-day opening in the US, pulling in $57 million compared to ‘Detective Pikachu’s’ $54.3 million. That’s pretty impressive, to say the least! Going up against Pikachu and Ryan Reynold’s is no easy task. ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ delivered though!

‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Breaking Records! – Hope For Video Game Films?

I went to see the film and was pleasantly surprised. I wanted to support the studio, but I also wanted to see it to see what it was like. Video game films have never had any respect in the past, and I wanted to see the film that the studio took so seriously. It was funny and quite a blast to be honest. It wasn’t a perfect film, but what is? You get your money’s worth with ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ and my kids loved it. It was entertaining, to say the least.

The voice acting by Ben Schwartz was top notch and gave Sonic a carefree, teen feeling who just wanted to enjoy life. James Marsden did fine as well, wasn’t his greatest performance but acting opposite a CGI hedgehog must not have been easy. Jim Carrey saw a return to form after a few year hiatus and his odd phase. It was great seeing Carrey back in the comedy that began his career, and even at 58 years old but his entire body into motion. The studio incorporated the classic music and sound effects throughout the film, reminding us all of our first time playing ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’.

If you’ve been skeptical of seeing it, I don’t blame you. It’s hard to see our favorite titles get turned into money grabs hoping to reach the biggest audience possible. ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ was an enjoyable film that gave gamers their nostalgia of the game while formulating a coherent plot. It’s well worth the watch!
